The exhibition is supported by Fragment Gallery. This exhibition project is a rare experiment with implementation of art objects directly into the main exposition of the Museum. There were hidden installations, sculptural objects, collages created by Fedotov-Fedorov in the exhibition space. Strange creatures inhabiting the isolated world of the artist entered into dialogue with natural science objects. Everyone who comes to the exhibition was involved in the search — they needed to find artist’s interventions to permanent exhibition displays.
The pink book, according to the artist, is an image of the “not yet happen” red book. It includes natural objects artist is trying to save, believing that all of them will sooner or later disappear. Ilya Fedotov-Fedorov looks at natural objects and rethinks them. Natural elements, brought by the will of the artist to the status of works of art, highlight the amazing subtlety and fragility of this world.
Ilya Fedotov-Fedorov was born in 1988.
Artist studied genetics (bioengineering) and philology in Moscow. After finishing his academic studies, Ilya took an interest in art, actively sketching and creating ideas for his future works.
The main motif of Fedotov-Fedorov’s art is the use of natural scientific knowledge. The artist adopts its main characteristics: the depiction of biological processes and forms from the cell to the habitat, linguistic features and ways of presenting knowledge (formulas, drawings, and so on), methodological principles and types of representation (entomological collections, card catalogues). With their help, he reveals the subjective nature of the acquisition of knowledge and its dependence on individual experience. He shows that we perceive and describe the surrounding world in accordance with the language we use.
The artist’s portfolio includes a large number of solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries in Russia and Europe. The artist was nominee for the State Prize in Contemporary Art “Innovation-2018” in the category “New Generation” (Russia). Ilya participated in the Main Project and Parallel Programme of the 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art and in residencies in Spain and Switzerland. In 2018 Ilya Fedotov-Fedorov will take a part in a residency at the Jan van Eyck Academy (Maastricht, Netherlands). The artist had been selected by the Vroman Foundation as its first Fellow.
His works are found at the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Museum of Modern Art and private collections.
He currently lives and works in Netherlands.
