Мартина Грлич

Martina Grlić (born in 1982 in Zagreb, Chroatia) is a Croatian artist whose main focus lies on figurative painting.

In her artistic practice she tries to revive the past by forwarding registered moments from the old photographs to her canvases, which become representations of remembering. Her photorealistic oil paintings are focused on memories of the past and reflect the changes that have occurred and are still occurring within the post-socialist society. She uses a lot of documentary references of former Yugoslavia: archival footage or photographs from a specific event, photographs from old factories or clips from news reports, and old journals, capturing the ideology which was lost and presenting those pictures once again in a new context by deconstructing and blending existing imagery, mixing color with black and white. Grlić refers to a world that doesn’t exist anymore and addresses the problems of today’s society, explores the history and seeks to understand the roots of the world she is living in. Despite the fact that her works depict elements from the past, her paintings are modern in concept and execution.

Martina Grlić studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Her works were exhibited at numerous solo and group shows in Croatia, France, Poland, China, Italy, Austria. In 2017 Martina received a Croatian Bank award for best young artist and in 2012 she won the Erste Grand Prix for Best Painting. In 2014 participated in Glo’art residency in Belgium.
