Alexander Shchurenkov

Untitled (Travel diary)

In the modern world, we often use a smartphone camera to look at architecture, art, nature and people. In order to preserve a remarkable and touching moment, we use our phone’s memory to store emotions as pictures, transforming 3D world into flat images. We collect such pictures by the thousands, and they are constantly replaced by newer digitized emotions. They become lost there until they are suddenly deleted, vanishing forever from our memory.

With these works Shchurenkov explores the psychological process of obliteration and deliberately chooses nondescript shots similar to pictures found in the brochures of travel agencies. They become exceptional thanks to the emotional and sensual response that they evoke. However, this response is totally lacking in the reconstructed image. After printing these photographs, Shchurenkov overlays them with color segments and planes, somewhat like a collage, replacing the details provoking the affective reaction.
