Ecoes of war

This two-channel synchronized audio-video installation records the act of carpet cleaning, the tradition that is widespread in the post-Soviet region. The artist and his sister performed this act during the summer of 2014.

The main scene displays two siblings cleaning the carpet in the yard of their parents’ house on a street bearing the utopian name of ‘Peace’. The sound of the cleaning echoes off the concrete walls wanders around the sleepy district and covers its indifferent body. The sound, like a ritualistic drum or a cannonade, immerses the street in a hypnotic trance, capturing a prehistoric anxiety, which lies at the basis of almost any ritual.
